Nervousness, worry or anxiety when taking an exam, whether it be one from school or work can be because we are being evaluated on our knowledge. We could worry that our memory will fail us, or that we may not perform to our full potential.

Hints+ Tips

Give this first technique a try for grounding.  Whilst this grounding technique is effective when you feel overwhelmed, it’s also helpful to practice it when you’re feeling calm and composed.  Grounding techniques that focus on the body, can regulate the body and prepare you for future challenges.

  1. Breathe – Try breathing in for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 4 seconds and breath out for 4 seconds.  Breath in for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 4 seconds and breath out for 4 seconds.  Focus on the breath and nothing else.  Repeat until you feel grounded or calm.
  2. Eat, Sleep and Exercise – In the weeks leading up to your exam get plenty of sleep, eat slow release carbohydrates, drink less caffeine and more water and get outside in the daylight for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.
  3. Create A Positive, Personal Mantra – For example ‘I am calm’ or ‘I can do this’.  Repeat this several times a day, everyday, to remind yourself how brilliant you are!
