When it comes to improving our health and wellbeing, we often approach it like the hare.
We rush headlong in and make lots of drastic changes all at once. We’re not helped by the noise of marketing and social media, which bombards us with the allure of quick fixes and radical changes.
However, remember the hare - well the hare didn’t maintain the race and ended up being beaten by the tortoise.
Similarly, all too often we crash and burn, failing to keep to the new ‘regime.’ We then feel worse about ourselves, as it’s another thing that we couldn’t stick to and now we feel like we’ve failed.
The tortoise approach isn’t as ‘glamorous’ but it works!
It works in regard to achieving lasting wellbeing.
Optimal Health isn't made or broken in a day, week, or even a month. It's the consistent habits we create over time that wield the greatest influence on our overall wellbeing.
Rather than chopping and changing between the latest diets and fads, it’s better served to focus on small and steady changes to your diet, such as incorporating wholesome and nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and legumes and making these ingredients a consistent part of your everyday meals.
Here are 8 small things you can do to help improve your nutrition habits:
You don’t need to make all these changes at once. Instead start with the top one and when you’re confident with this, bring in the next one and so on. You’ll find that consistency with maintaining one of these things will create a positive momentum. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going. So much more rewarding and an approach that is sustainable in the long term.
We don’t just need consistency in our physical health; it's also deeply intertwined with our mental and emotional wellbeing.
When we are able to be consistent, we build trust – trust in ourselves to follow through and trust from others who rely on us, which in turn boosts our self-esteem and empowers us to tackle new challenges.
Whilst it's tempting to seek rapid and extreme changes, sustainable progress often leads to lasting results.
It was the tortoise that kept plodding on and who won the race. Consistency won the day!
